Reva Urban (eventually known simply as “Reva”) was an American woman artist who achieved success in the art world in the 1950s and 1960s, but has essentially vanished from art history. Her career offers important insights into the relationship of gender to art production, form and content. This talk will examine her innovative shaped canvases and constructions and address how her sense of identify affected her output. Like that of some of her contemporaries, Reva’s engagement in feminist ideas augured concerns that became increasingly prominent in the art of the late 1960s and beyond.

THROUGH FEBRUARY 14th

In celebration of Valentines Day, Temple Gallery has commissioned artist Susie Brandt to create an artwork led by love. Brandt's response is I <3 CZ. CZ refers to the late fiber artist Claire Zeisler . Based in Chicago for much of her life, Zeisler (1903-1991) was internationally known for her draped forms of braided and knotted threads. These "Cousin It" like sculptures are the inspiration for Brandt's commission. Made from 120 skeins of red Red Heart yarn, Brandt's commission will spill over the gallery couch and floor in a loving tribute to Claire Zeisler.

Susie Brandt is an artist who worked at the Claire Zeisler Workshop in Chicago over the summer of 1986. Now living in Baltimore, Brandt's work has addressed issues of domesticity, consumption, abundance, time, and devotion. Her work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Brandt is on the faculty of the Fiber and Foundation Department at Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore.

Natural Dye Workshop in the Temple Gallery

The Temple Gallery at Tyler School of Art will be hosting a number of natural dye workshops, the first is this Friday.
This week see BLUEREDYELLOW on Friday, January 27 from 2-5pm
Join us for the first of a three-session workshop with Philadelphia-based design and natural dye house, BLUEREDYELLOW. During this first session, BLUEREDYELLOW will demonstrate how to prepare fabric for natural dyes, prepare an indigo fermentation vat, as well as discuss plant dyes, resist and over-dye methods. The other scheduled workshops will be held on Friday, February 10, and Friday, February 24, both from 2-5pm. Space is limited, if you want to come call Sarah at 215-777-9138 to reserve a spot.

Langhorne Carpet Co.

We recently had the opportunity to visit the Langhorne Carpet Co. in Penndel, PA. The Langhorne Carpet Co. is a family owned business that has been in operation since 1930 and is one of only two surviving decorative carpet mills in the country. They are currently running a student design competition that will result in a student designed carpet being put into production on a Jacquard Wilton broadloom and being made available as a finished product through the company. Visiting the mill was an eye opening experience about textile production in this country and the beauty of design and craft through industry. FiberPhiladelphia Opening Event. Auther is the author of the book Spring, Felt, Thread. After the lecture there will be openings all around Philadelphia.

Elissa Auther will discuss the explosion of fiber and fiber-based practices in contemporary art and everyday life. The 21st century has witnessed a tremendous increase in the visibility of fiber in art, a rise related to the broader currency of craft within the context of DIY and artisan movements, among other social, political, and cultural forces. In this talk, Auther discusses this terrain, with an emphasis on the unique role fiber has played in the expansion of artistic practice today.

Studio Electives (12-15 credits):
Course descriptions can be viewed on the Graduate School website and in the Undergraduate Bulletin. Please note that taking any course under the 5000 level for graduate credit requires prior approval from the studio area head.
Internship: No internship is required.
Language Examination: No language examination is required.
Culminating Events:
An approved thesis exhibition, written statement of working philosophy, and slide and/or CD portfolio are required at the final review in order to meet the M.F.A. requirements. The thesis exhibition should be the fruit of the two years' studio research and practice in which the student engaged.
The student defends her/his thesis exhibition to the review committee. The committee then evaluates the exhibition as pass with distinction, pass, or fail.

About the Program
The graduate program in Fibers and Materials Studies is a two-year, 60-credit program leading to the Master of Fine Arts degree. Our nationally recognized faculty, who bring to the program a reputation for excellence in teaching with a wide range of attitudes and philosophical positions, are complemented by an extensive schedule of visiting artists and critics. Students can also draw from the cultural resources of Philadelphia and the nearby art centers of New York and Washington, DC.

The focus in Fibers and Materials Studies is augmented and balanced by specially designed graduate-level Art History courses and seminars; a required interdisciplinary seminar; and studio electives that ensure cross-disciplinary contact among students.

Areas of Specialization:
In the Fibers area, equipment is available for traditional and contemporary techniques, including new technologies that allow the development of surface imagery with photographic stencils, as well as the creation of weave structures on a computer AVL loom. Students are encouraged to experiment with the materials, techniques, and concepts previously developed in their work.
Job Placement:
The M.F.A. program prepares graduates for careers as professional artists, craftspersons, designers, and educators.

Nick Cave is the most recent artist in residence at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. His current show "Let's C" opened on the 16th with a record number of attendees.

"The exhibition features Cave’s iconic “Soundsuits”—which function in chorus as dance costumes, sculptures, and extensions of one’s persona—video of recent performance, and, for the first time, Architectural Forest: an ambitious, floor-to-ceiling installation of ornamented bamboo. This forest serves as a playful yet mysterious landscape in which Cave’s December 16th performance at FWM takes place.

For over two decades, Nick Cave has constructed Soundsuits out of a litany of unique, found materials, such as crocheted hats, plastic sandwich bags, gleaming buttons, stuffed animals, and other items from thrift stores, flea markets, and estate sales. Their sculptural form functions simultaneously to display and conceal through the visual references to the exuberance of masquerade and the protection of body armor."-Fabric Workshop & Museum Website

This course involves the exploration of alternative materials not primarily intended or used by fiber artists. Products such as Tyvek, rubber, adhesives, found and recycled materials will be combined with processes such as collage, layering, stitching, and heating. This is a course open for enrollment to majors and non-majors from sophomore to graduate level. The exploration of alternative materials will be used in conjunction with other media and unconventional methods of joining to create a strong, sculptural surface. Technical demonstrations, field trips, and conceptual problems with an emphasis on the process of collecting will be used as a basis for the creation of unconventional work. Students will be encouraged to experiment with these materials and processes in combination with media from other disciplines. Students will create work based on a personal direction discovered through the course. Areas of focus for study include two and three dimensional forms, functional and nonfunctional constructions.

This course emphasizes the development of digital capture, exploration of scanning and digital cameras, and translating images on to pliable substrates including fabrics, papers, plastics, and other materials. Single and repeat images, pattern formation, scale, and collage work will be realized using inkjet printing, alternative photographic methods including, Polaroid, Thermofax, and Xerox, and heat and solvent based transfers. Students will experiment with analog and digital compositing processes and material considerations. Students will use these contemporary practices to create innovative two and three-dimensional work.

Over three hundred entries are juried each year resulting in the selection of nine winning artists.

"For the best part of the century after the Civil War, Philadelphia represented prowess in production, the American apex of skill, versatility and diversity in manufacturing.

No city had a wider range of textile products, churned forth by factories in Kensington, Germantown, Frankford and Manayunk. At the turn of the century, roughly seven hundred separate companies operated in textiles alone, employing some sixty thousand people.

During the month of December, The Design Center at Philadelphia University’s Historic Textile Collection, curated by Sarah E Moore, will create a visual history of Philadelphia’s rich textile heritage within the Art in the Age gallery.

Of the four required courses, two must be Art History Seminar classes chosen from a range of graduate offerings (5000 to 5800 or 8000 to 9980). Please visit the Art History course listing for more information.
Studio Electives (12-15 credits):
Course descriptions can be viewed on the Graduate School website and in the Undergraduate Bulletin. Please note that taking any course under the 5000 level for graduate credit requires prior approval from the studio area head.
Internship: No internship is required.
Language Examination: No language examination is required.
Culminating Events:
An approved thesis exhibition, written statement of working philosophy, and slide and/or CD portfolio are required at the final review in order to meet the M.F.A. requirements. The thesis exhibition should be the fruit of the two years' studio research and practice in which the student engaged.
The student defends her/his thesis exhibition to the review committee. The committee then evaluates the exhibition as pass with distinction, pass, or fail.

The graduate program in Fibers and Materials Studies is a two-year, 60-credit program leading to the Master of Fine Arts degree. Our nationally recognized faculty, who bring to the program a reputation for excellence in teaching with a wide range of attitudes and philosophical positions, are complemented by an extensive schedule of visiting artists and critics. Students can also draw from the cultural resources of Philadelphia and the nearby art centers of New York and Washington, DC.

This piece is about the personification of an inanimate object, and highlighting how personifying the couch touches upon human contact within limited space confinement. Upon working on the piece as a group, and bringing in individual pieces to form a whole (of the four person group, each member created one of the four major limbs for the couch), we discovered that our pieces served more as a mockery to the human form rather than a direct replication of it. We decided to focus on the humorous aspect of a couch trying to imitate a human being with legs and arms made of the only materials a couch might have readily available to it... fabric. By individually creating each limb, we created a group piece that reflects each of our personalities. Our goal is to make the viewer more aware of their surroundings by the inclusion of these pieces, since they will most likely nudge into the leg/feet of the couch or rest on the arms of it at some point, and to touch upon the idea of human contact within small spaces, like the limited space available on the couch. Depending on the individual, the closeness and contact with other people, especially their skin, can be either very overwhelming or not bothersome at all.

When entering the Tyler Gallery the viewer is immediately confronted with a decision; interact with the couch in the conventional sense or interpret it as an art object. By transforming the couch we are further questioning what can exist within the confines of an art gallery. We are imposing a three-dimensional space that evokes elements of a traditional landscape painting through the use of interactive forms. Much like a painting the viewer can determine their place with the piece, whether it be to simply view the landscape or imagine themselves within the imposed environment.

Alexis Turner, Fibers and Material Studies major, has an internship with artist Jessie Hemmons, who owns a company called Ishknits and does "yarnbombing" all over the city. Yarnbombing is basically street art using crochet and knitting, and is becoming increasingly popular. For this particular project, Alexis and Jesse worked with PhillyWorks on a show with the theme "Qualities of Life in Philadelphia". Several different artists participated in the show. They covered the doorway, the window bars, a planter, and a street lamp to bring attention to the space. The building was abandoned and is going to be torn down. They are allowed to leave the knit pieces up until it gets knocked down. The building is on the corner of 18th and Christian St. in South Philadelphia, check it out while its still up!

Daniel Kornrumpf’s embroideries live within the conventions of portraiture yet deal with images from popular social networking websites where desire, vanity, and arbitration play dominant roles. For him, they exist in two states of mind; one where we are isolated, self consciously, representing ourselves through photographs. The other is, on closer examination, completely embedded and woven into the social fabric where everyone is connected and the same. The thread that makes up the portrait is the same as the thread of the canvas. Daniel’s curiosity lies in the ways we are all inextricably connected.

Our group was interested in using various techniques to imitate natural growth. In this very urban setting, we are often surrounded by the natural process of growth around and into unnatural or man-made objects. We wanted to mimic and pay homage to that growth within the gallery space and in relation to a specific man-made object, in this case the couch. We are hoping that viewers feel open to engage with the growing material on the couch and that they feel free to surround themselves with it by sitting down. We used materials that are extremely tactile to facilitate this interaction.

Yo, I'm Soft: A Touch and Feel Petting Zoo invites the Tyler community to engage their sense of touch in an art environment with wallabies, a baby deer, hedgehog, turtle, lamb and a little fox (courtesy of Peaceable Kingdom Petting Zoo). Fiber Futures: Japan's Textile Pioneers showcases the dynamic field of Japanese fiber art. Organized as a juried show jointly presented by Japan Society and International Textile Network Japan in collaboration with Tama University Art Museum, the works on display range from ethereal silk and hemp to paper pulp and synthetic fiber using methods that are sometimes deeply traditional, but sometimes employ the latest weaving and dyeing technology along with an environmentally conscious "green" ethos. Moving far beyond traditional utility, Japan's textile pioneers fuse past and present to create innovative, beautiful and sometimes challenging works of art.

Diana Cooper is an artist based in New York City. Her work combines drawing, painting, sculpture and installation. In 2007 the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland mounted an exhibition of her work from the previous decade, and published Beyond the Line, the Art of Diana Cooper. In 2009 she completed “Out of the Corner of My Eye,” a permanent installation commissioned by the New York Department of Cultural Affairs and Polshek Architects.

Ms. Cooper is currently preparing for her next solo show at Postmasters Gallery in New York City. Cooper’s new work explores photography, video and animation.

We seek to explore the idea of a contained sculptural space within a larger formal gallery setting. We investigate the space between what is revealed and what is concealed through the form that we have created. We are interested in discovering how color, texture and material can transform the sterility of a space and bring comfort. While the technique of crochet itself carries associations to craft history we hope to give it a new context, which overwhelms, delights and surrounds while expressing the greater form through only line. By creating a space in which the sitter is surrounded by or displayed within the couch setting, the couch space is fully understood from multiple perspectives.

Chambersburg, PA- Historic Preservation Services will be hosting Philadelphia artist Kristen Rosser for a first Friday show on November 4, 2011 in The Building at 252 E. King Street in Chambersburg. The show will feature recent works which are a combination of textiles and found materials and which are created using traditional and non-traditional methods.

Rosser is a currently a senior at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Her works are influenced by her experiences in Philadelphia and her experiences as a runner. Rosser’s art contains dyed and rust printed fabrics embellished with embroidery and materials such as glass and plastic barrettes. Her work has been shown in the galleries at Tyler.

Our exploration of the couch deals with texture and form through the use of found fabrics. Our inspiration begins with the artist, Judith Scott, who uses wrapping as means of therapeutic communication. We wanted to give this couch a “new life” by creating a solid object rather than a piece of furniture. The use of repetitive wrapping makes this possible by adding dimension and building up form. Our use of materials can relate to Scott by continuing her method of collecting found fabrics.

Dans Restaurant, 1049 Penn Street, Reading, will provide refreshments and wine advice at the opening reception of Felt So Good. Bill and Monir will be on hand to answer your questions about selecting and serving wine and to invite you to visit their awesome restaurant. Opened in 1989, Dans Restaurant is Reading’s premier fine dining establishment. Dans Restaurant serves a contemporary American cuisine with a French influence. ‘some things looming’ proudly presents, “Felt So Good” an exhibit demonstrating the versatility of felt. This exhibit presents over 30 examples of the medium, representing the work of 15 artisans from across the country. Utilizing felt techniques to express themselves in some surprising and always delightful ways, this show must not be missed. One of the oldest forms of textile craft in the history of mankind, felting predates spinning, weaving, and knitting. Today, felt is still widely used to create wearable and functional pieces, but it is also used to create art in the form of wall hangings, sculpture, installation pieces, home décor, whatever the imagination can design! Artists were challenged to create works created entirely with felt or contained and incorporated felted components.
Felt, a non-woven cloth is produced by matting and pressing animal fibers until they form together through a process called wet felting. Needle felting is a variation of the wet felting process, using a special needle tool instead of wetting the wool and using friction to bind the fibers. Closing Reception: November 5th 1-4 pm Closing Reception/Book Signing: Local artist and Muhlenberg HS Art teacher, Kachina Martin was selected to appear in "500 Felt Objects", the latest book in the popular “500 Series”. The “Felt So Good” exhibit makes a great back drop for sharing the book and from 2:00 to 4:00, Kachina will be on hand to answer questions and to sign books.
About the author of *“500 Felt Objects”* Juror Susan Brown lives in New York and is the associate curator of textiles at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. She curated the exhibition “Fashioning Felt” and has written and lectured extensively on the topic. She also co-curated “Quicktakes: Rodarte” with Gregory Krum; “Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay”; and “Extreme Textiles: Designing for High Performance with Matilda McQuaid.” She teaches in the School of Art and Design History and Theory, Parsons The New School for Design, as well as lecturing regularly for the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Works Exhibition. The exhibition runs from November 4 – December 19,

Jack Shainman Gallery is pleased to announce Ever-After, a solo exhibition of new work by Nick Cave. Cave will present a group of ‘Soundsuits.’ This sculptural form based on the scale of the artist’s body is at the core of Cave’s practice. It camouflages the body, masking and creating a second skin that conceals race, gender, and class, forcing the viewer to look without judgment. However, Ever-After marks a noticeable shift in his approach. The ‘Soundsuits’ will interact within subtly narrative tableaux. These figurative landscapes connect the viewer to a social consciousness, summoning the echoes and voices which Cave believes have been paralyzed to silence and subjected to unfair altercations in an often hostile society.

‘Mating Season’ is an encounter of white-haired, boyish bunny figures suggesting a sublime play of fornication, placed in multiple positions. ‘Speak Louder’ comprises a group of figures that unite into one organism. Several of the figures gesture in a manner that reveals emotional references and together speaks of a multiplying figure that becomes an assemblage or a whole. The unifying surface of the piece is constructed from a surge of assorted black buttons. Each button offers the reflection of a memory, a thought, and the inheritance of personal identity. The accumulation of buttons invades a singular cloth producing a choir of voices. These tableaux will provoke new readings of Cave’s work, which in the past has been constructed around the individual figure.

The cumulative effect will be a black and white interior psychological world probing consciousness, contemplation and deep exploration. There is an ephemeral quality that articulates both absence and a transcendent yet dependent spirit. Ultimately Cave strips down to the bare essence in this exhibition, turning his back on the noise as he chooses to walk into what he pictures as an abyss of serenity. This experience is inextricably linked to Cave’s concurrent solo exhibition at Mary Boone Gallery, which is an open playground of ‘Soundsuits’ that celebrates exuberance, chaos, and color. The two exhibitions form one complete encounter.

A solo traveling exhibition of Cave’s work entitled Meet Me at the Center of the Earth was organized by Yerba Buena Art Center, San Francisco, and was recently on view at the Seattle Art Museum. A major presentation of Cave’s work will be on view at the Tri Postal, Lille, France, in Fall 2012.

Cave has recently been included in group exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 2011; Göteborgs Konsthall, Sweden, 2010; and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany, 2011. He is also included in 30 Americans: Rubell Family Collection, which opens in October 2011 at the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, DC, and will be included in the Prospect.2 Biennial, taking place throughout New Orleans in Fall 2011.

Public collections include the Brooklyn Museum, New York; Crystal Bridges, Bentonville; the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit; the High Museum, Atlanta; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Museum of Art and Design, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle; among others.

Cave has received several prestigious awards including: the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award (2008), Artadia Award (2006), the Joyce Award (2006), Creative Capital Grants (2002, 2004 and 2005), and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2001). Cave, who received his MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, is Professor and Chairman of the Fashion Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

From Andre Leon Talley sat hugely brooding to Nicky Minaj attired like something odd won at a fairground, a crowd packed with both power and pizazz turned out to support Prabal Gurung on Saturday.

And there was none of the usual fashion-angoisse here, but instead a genuine sense of anticipation. This was a room coursing in goodwill. At the finale the applause for Gurung was even peppered with uncharacteristic whoops. This suggests he's been pegged as New York's hottest young designer of the moment.

His collection was certainly wonderfully made, spectacularly ambitious and dizzyingly complicated. And Gurung managed to make purple lamé attractive in a series of psychedelic printed gowns and airbrush fade-effect skirts. He also cracked one of fashion's trickiest problems - how to wear a long hem and simultaneously show some leg - by presenting a gown transparent from mid-thigh to ankle.

There was "exploding tulle", "techno wool", and "recycled rubber paillettes" - sometimes seemingly all in the same outfit: Gurung is no minimalist. Even the models' lipstick was mind-boggling; a two-tone red on the outside, fading to blue at the lipline that made it look like they'd all been sucking the same leaky pen. So Gurung's technical virtuosity certainly merited that applause, but the whooping was a bit much.

This summer I had the opportunity to spend the summer working for Phylleri Ball of Steam Valley Fiber Farm in Trout Run, PA. It is a 14 acre farm where she raises colored angora goats and Border Leicester/ Corriedale cross sheep. The sheep get shorn once per year and the goats are shorn twice. Phylleri uses her fleeces and other fleece bought locally to product socks, roving, and yarn which are made at local mills. She does all the processing and dyeing of the fleeces herself before they are sent to the mill. She also dyes commercially produced yarn to sell. Phylleri sells her products at markets and festivals in the Northeast. She will be at Rhinebeck sheep and wool festival in October. (http://www.sheepandwool.com/)

The farm is run as organically and sustainably as possible. The animals are fed grass as much as possible and the little bit of grain which is fed is organic. Whenever possible, Phylleri uses herbs or natural remedies for the animals and used antibiotics only as a last resort. Everything that can be composted is saved and is eventually spread back onto the fields. The farm has a garden and an orchard and most of the food which the family and I ate came from the farm.

As an intern, I helped with all the daily workings of the farm. Chores started at 5:30am. After chores and breakfast, we would work on projects such as setting up fencing, cleaning barns, trimming hooves, or gardening. We would do evening chores at about 5:30 pm and after dinner have time for fiber work. The internship was unpaid, but in exchange for my work, Phylleri taught me spinning and felting techniques. In Home Within Home, Do Ho Suh will present a series of works that reflect the artist’s ongoing exploration of themes surrounding cultural displacement and the co-existence of cultural identities, as well as the perception of our surroundings and how one constructs a memory of a space. Suh’s own feeling of displacement when he arrived in the U.S. in 1991 to study at RISD led him to measure spaces in order to establish relationships with his new surroundings. Years later, the artist developed the idea of taking these measurements and using them to replicate and transport spaces. Suh constructs these architectural spaces and the elements within them in various mediums including fabrics, resin, and Styrofoam. Among the works exhibited in this show will be Fallen Star 1/5, Home Within Home, and a series of fabric objects, all personally revealing works which invite viewers into his homes.

The Textile Museum Joins The George Washington University Increased Exhibition Space and Engagement with the GW Academic Community Ensure a Bright Future.

WASHINGTON—The Textile Museum and the George Washington University today announced an affiliation whereby The Textile Museum will move to the George Washington University’s Foggy Bottom Campus to become a cornerstone of a new museum scheduled to open in mid-2014.

Exhibitions and programs will be presented to the public in a custom-built, approximately 35,000 square foot museum building located at G and 21st Streets, bearing the names of both The Textile Museum and the George Washington University Museum. The new museum will include dedicated galleries for The Textile Museum, with increased exhibition space compared to its present facilities. Until the new museum opens, The Textile Museum will continue operating at its current location.

In addition to the new museum, the university today announced that it will construct a 20,000 square foot conservation and resource center on its Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Loudoun County, Va., for the study and care of The Textile Museum and the university's collections. This center will include storage facilities, a conservation laboratory, and facilities for access to the collection.

The affiliation with the university will allow The Textile Museum to expand its rich tradition of scholarship, education, and fostering cultural understanding as it broadly integrates its activities into the far-reaching GW academic community.

“The collaboration between the world-renowned Textile Museum and the George Washington University will create unparalleled opportunities for students, researchers and scholars as well as for the general public,” said GW President Steven Knapp.

The affiliation with GW comes at a time of stability and success at The Textile Museum. Recent achievements include the never-before-seen collection of Central Asian ikat textiles in the exhibition and publication: “Colors of the Oasis: Central Asian Ikats.” This exhibition will soon travel to the Seattle Art Museum and Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Other achievements include the engagement of a new, younger audience with the popular PM@ The TM after hours program and an increase in collaborations with the Washington-based diplomatic community to further cultural understanding through textile arts. The Textile Museum has accomplished these impressive initiatives while maintaining a balanced budget through a difficult economic period.

“Perhaps the single-most important development for the museum since it opened its doors in 1925, this relationship ensures The Textile Museum’s exciting future with increased access to its superb collection, enhanced scholarly activities, and continued focus on public programs, education and exhibitions,” said Bruce P. Baganz, president of the board of trustees of The Textile Museum. “This affiliation further enhances the museum’s role as the leader in the key challenge of cultivating successive generations of those who appreciate textiles as art. Moreover, collaboration with the GW community strengthens our physical presence, and in conjunction with GW resources, can lead to fulfillment of the aspiration to be a ‘global information switchboard,’ an endeavor that has applications far beyond the museum itself.”

On the crucial importance of continued financial support, Dr. Baganz said, “There are wideranging interest groups who are passionate about The Textile Museum. It is imperative that all continue to support the museum’s activities so that it can continue its distinguished tradition of art, scholarship, publications and educational programs. This ensures the ability to meet the worthy goal of providing every visitor with a unique, personally relevant and memorable experience.”

In this unprecedented arrangement between a university museum and an existing art museum, The Textile Museum will continue management of its internationally acclaimed collection of more than 18,000 objects, which will be on perpetual loan to the university. The agreement, pending final approval by both Boards of Trustees, also specifies that Textile Museum staff will continue to develop exhibitions and programs that align with the current mission, which will remain the same after moving to the new location.

“This is a truly unique collaboration,” said Ford W. Bell, President of the American Association of Museums. “By combining resources, these institutions increase their reach and impact while The Textile Museum maintains the reputation and identity it has established over the last eight decades. It is a tribute to the present vigor and future promise of The Textile Museum that two organizations of this international caliber were able to maximize their respective strengths.”

The new George Washington University Museum also will include the recently announced Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection and Center for National Capital Area Studies, additional galleries and space for academic and scholarly activity, public lectures and other forums, all of which will be integrated into a wide range of academic studies.

The Arts Décoratifs has given ‘carte blanche’ to one of the most innovative and creative fashion designers of our time: Hussein Chalayan.

Born in Nicosia in 1970, he moved to London as a child traveling back and forth between Cyprus and England until he went to university. He earned his degree from Central Saint Martins College in 1993.

Following his own unique approach to design for seventeen years, he stands on the frontier of fashion, architecture and design. His work is characterized by an intellectual rigor and a quest for technical perfection that often defies fashion stereotypes. Chalayan stood out from the start of his career through his highly inventive exploration of various mediums, including sculpture, furniture, video and special effects, which he uses in his fashion shows, drawing inspiration directly from the political, social and economic realities of his era.

The exhibition showcases this rich, complex world, in which clothing, installations, fashion shows, projections and research are shown by side to illustrate Chalayan’s distinctive process.

American artist Eva Hesse (1936–1970) played a central role in the transformation of sculpture that took place in the 1960s. In addition to her
large-scale sculptures, over the course of her all-too-brief career, she produced a group of experimental works that are now recognized for their significance. Neither simply preparatory nor necessarily finished, these works—termed “studioworks” by art historian and exhibition curator Briony Fer—can be seen as capturing moments of experimentation, where Hesse is trying out ideas and techniques and discovering new possibilities. These fascinating sculptures dramatize and draw attention to the open-ended nature of Hesse’s oeuvre as a whole.

A close look at two of the works from the exhibition provides insight into how this rarely seen group of sculptures brings to light the inner workings of the artist’s process. Hesse is known for her experiments with a remarkable range of unusual materials. In Studiowork, 1968 (see second image in slideshow at left), a cluster of slender plastic tubes seem to sprout from a fiberglass base. Use of new, synthetic materials such as fiberglass, which changes color over time, allowed her to explore the temporal dimension of art, and to create work that interacts with light in a variety of ways. In this work, the lasting and the ephemeral coexist, as do the industrial and the organic, the solid and the hollow, and the transparent and the opaque. Hesse’s No title, 1996 (see third image in slideshow at left) is attached to the wall like a painting or drawing, but has palpable sculptural attributes, including a surface texture rough with marks, revealing the process of its own making, along with suggestive, pendulous shapes. The play of gravity, the sly tension between the taut and the curled “lines” created by the rope or the string—as well as between the two quirky, dangling objects—brings the sensual language of the body into the realm of minimal sculpture.

Brian Jungen: Crafting Everyday Objects Into Art.

Artist Brian Jungen says that one of the best ways to get people to look at artwork is to create it out of materials that they recognize. Visitors to Jungen's exhibit at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., will recognize plenty of the materials that compose Jungen's work — everything from basketball sneakers to plastic chairs to baseball gloves.

Jungen's exhibit is the first solo show of a living Native American artist at the Museum of the American Indian. He says that much of his work is a response to the hostility and stereotypes that he faced as a person of First Nations ancestry.

"My investigations into my own cultural background happened when I was a late teenager," Jungen explains to NPR's Guy Raz. "I started to do a lot of drawings that were taking advantage of stereotypes that exist of Indian folks."

In what he calls a "reverse ethnographic study," Jungen conducted informal surveys on the street — asking people to sketch their ideas about native art and culture. He then "exploited" these ideas by turning them into satirical drawings and wall paintings — "a way of kind of reclaiming the term 'Indian,' " he says.

Much of Jungen's work is created out of sports paraphernalia — a suit of armor made of catcher mitts, a skull crafted from baseball skins, blankets woven from jerseys, and totem poles of stacked golf bags. It's a deliberate choice, Jungen says, to make art from materials belonging to an industry that has claimed names such as The Chiefs, Indians, Redskins and Braves.

"I felt that if these professional sports teams felt that they had every right to use this terminology, then I had every right to exploit their materials for my artwork," Jungen says.

Jungen also draws inspiration from the ritual aspect of American sports.

"Professional sports play a role in society that serves like a ritual and ceremony," he says. "Having experienced that within my own family — the dancing and drumming that I participate in — I know how important that is. So I wanted to use that — use things that people would recognize in their everyday world."
